Scarini adlarını diş quruluşlarından alırlar. Bu, digər balıqlardan, o cümlədən digər Labridlərdən fərqlidir.[5] Onların çoxsaylı dişləri çənə sümüklərinin xarici səthində sıx bir mozaika şəklində düzülmüşdür və bu, papağanın dimdiyinə bənzər bir quruluş yaradır. Bu quruluş vasitəsilə onlar mərcan və digər qayalıq səthlərindən yosunları qazıyırlar (bu, bioeroziya prosesinə töhfə verir).
