Salix prolixa—MacKenzie's willow. Named for Alexander MacKenzie, a renown fur trader and intrepid explorer of western Canada and northwestern United States. MacKenzie's willow is found in the Rocky Mountains from Wyoming northwards and in the Sierra Nevada and Cascades north from California. It reaches north to the Yukon and Alaska. The willow can reach 10 meters in height given ideal conditions, but more commonly grows to 2 or 3 meters. The leaves appear the same time as the catkins. The plant that provided the leaves photographed resides in Regional Parks Botanic Garden located in Tilden Regional Park near Berkeley, CA.
