"Poliocephalus rufopectus", qaqar dəstəsinə aid suya dalan bir quşdur.[3] İngilis ornitoloq Corc Robert Qrey tərəfindən 1843-cü ildə "Podiceps rufopectus" kimi təsvir edilmişdir.[4] Növün tip nümunəsi Britaniya botaniki və elmi kolleksiyaçı Endryu Sinkleyr tərəfindən Yeni Zelandiyada toplanmışdır.[4][5] "P. rufopectus", "Poliocephalus" cinsinə aid iki növdən biridir, digəri isə Avstraliyaya endemik olan bozbaş qaqardır (Poliocephalus poliocephalus).[6][7]
