Adi porvil 1844-cü ildə ornitoloq Con Ceyms Odübon tərəfindən təsvir edilmişdir. Odubon, Cənubi Dakota ərazisində Missuri çayının şərq sahilində toplanan nümunə əsasında bu quşa "Caprimulgus nuttallii" binominal adını vermişdir. Xüsusi epitet, onun dostu olan ornitoloq Tomas Nattolun şərəfinə seçilmişdir.[3][4] 1880-ci ildə amerikalı ornitoloq Robert Ricvey bu növü "Phalaenoptilus" cinsinə aid etmişdir.[5] Cins adı qədim yunan sözləri olan "phalaina" (güvə) və "ptilon" (lələk) sözlərindən götürülmüşdür.[6]
