1872–1875-ci illərdə Frayburq, Heydelberq və Romada klassik filologiya və antik tarix üzrə təhsil almış, 1875-ci ildə Roma Universitetində fəlsəfə doktoru dərəcəsini əldə etmişdir. 1879-cu ildə Romada dosent olmuşdur. 1891–1912-ci illərdə antik tarix üzrə tam professor vəzifəsində çalışmışdır. 1912-ci ildə Leypsiq Universitetində qədim tarix professoru idi.[5]
