Deril Bem ABŞ-da anadan olmuşdur. Ali təhsilini psixologiya sahəsində almış, doktorluq dərəcəsini isə sosial psixologiya üzrə tamamlamışdır.[4] Elmi karyerası boyunca müxtəlif ABŞ universitetlərində dərs demiş və tədqiqat aparmışdır.[5]
Bem 1960–1970-ci illərdə irəli sürdüyü özünüqavrama nəzəriyyəsi ilə məşhurdur.[5] Bu nəzəriyyəyə görə, insanlar öz daxili münasibət və emosiyalarını bəzən birbaşa introspeksiya yolu ilə deyil, daha çox öz davranışlarını və bu davranışların baş verdiyi konteksti müşahidə etməklə formalaşdırırlar.[6] Nəzəriyyə xüsusilə koqnitiv dissonans nəzəriyyəsinə alternativ və ya tamamlayıcı yanaşma kimi qiymətləndirilmişdir.[7]
Bem sosial təsir, münasibətlərin formalaşması, cinsi rollar və şəxsiyyət xüsusiyyətləri sahələrində də tədqiqatlar aparmışdır.[8] Onun hazırladığı Bemin Gender Rolu Anketi (Bem Sex-Role Inventory, BSRI) psixologiyada gender rollarının ölçülməsi üçün geniş istifadə olunan alətlərdən biridir.[9]
2011-ci ildə Bem-in nəşr etdirdiyi və insanların gələcək hadisələri “öncədən hiss edə bilməsi”ni (precognition) iddia edən eksperimental məqalə elmi ictimaiyyətdə geniş müzakirələrə və tənqidlərə səbəb olmuşdur.[10] Bu iş psixologiyada replikasiya böhranı və statistik metodların etibarlılığı barədə debatları gücləndirmişdir.[11]
Deril Bem-in işləri sosial psixologiyanın nəzəri və metodoloji inkişafına ciddi təsir göstərmişdir.[12] Onun bəzi tədqiqatları mübahisəli olsa da, bu mübahisələr elmi metodların təkmilləşdirilməsi və açıq elm prinsiplərinin güclənməsi baxımından mühüm rol oynamışdır.[13]
