Bu ilan ABŞ-nin cənub-qərb çöllərində və Meksikanın daxili bölgələrində rast gəlinir. Xüsusilə fərqli zəhər tipləri istehsal etməsilə məşhurdur.
Crotalus scutulatus-un tip nümunəsi Filadelfiya Təbiət Elmləri Akademiyasının (Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences) kolleksiyasındadır.[3][4] Tip yeri "Fort Buchanan, Arizona" olaraq qeyd edilmişdir.[3][5]
