Qaraboğazın ilk rəsmi təsviri 1891-ci ildə rus ornitoloqları Valentin Bianki və Mixail Berezovski tərəfindən verilmiş və onlar "Larvivora obscura" binomial adını təqdim etmişdilər.[3][4] Növ daha sonra "Luscinia" cinsinə daxil edilsə də, 2010-cu ildə nəşr edilən molekulyar filogenetik tədqiqat göstərdi ki, "Luscinia" monofiletik deyil və cins bölünərək, qaraboğaz da daxil olmaqla, bir neçə növ bərpa edilmiş "Calliope" cinsinə köçürüldü.[5][6]
