The Battle of the Volga was a military confrontation between the Oghuz Yabghu State and the Khazar Khaganate that took place near the lower Volga River in the 9th century. The battle is considered part of the wider Oghuz–Khazar conflicts during the early medieval period.
The Oghuz Turks, a confederation of Turkic tribes, began expanding westward in the 8th–9th centuries. The Khazar Khaganate, which controlled the Volga region, posed a major obstacle to this expansion.
Though little is known about the exact date and scale of the battle, historical sources suggest that the Oghuz forces managed to defeat the Khazars and gain control over parts of the Volga trade routes.
Following the battle, the Oghuz Turks gradually asserted dominance over the region, facilitating their eventual movement towards the steppes of Eastern Europe.
