Karl Linney böyük arqusa bu spesifik adını (həm ümumi adı, həm də cins adı) onun qanadlarındakı mürəkkəb göz şəklindəki naxışlara görə vermişdir, bu da Yunan mifologiyasındakı yüzgözlü nəhəng Arqosa işarə edir.[3] "Argusianus" cinsi, 1849-cu ildə İngilis zooloqu Corc Qrey tərəfindən təqdim edilmişdir və böyük arqus bu cinsin tipik növüdür.[4][5][6]
