Helmut İohan Lüdviq fon Moltke 25 may 1848-ci ildə Meklenburq-Ön Pomeraniyada yerləşən Bindorfda anadan olmuşdur. O, Helmut Moltkenin (Böyük) qardaşı oğludur.
