Gideon Alcernon Mantell 3 fevral 1790-cı ildə Luisdə anadan olmuşdur. Onun iquanadontun xarici görünüşünü və həyat tərzini bərpa etməyə cəhd göstərməsi dinozavrların elmi cəhətdən öyrənilməsinin əsası hesab olunur. 1822-ci ildə o, əvvəlcə, daşlaşmış dişləri, daha sonra isə iquanodontun skeletinin böyük bir hissəsini (və son nəticədə identifikasiyasını) aşkar etdi.
