Stema municipiului Buzău se compune dintr-un scut triunghiular cu marginile rotunjite, Îpărţit în trei cartiere, traversat de un râu undat de culoare albastră. În câmpul superior, în cartierul din dreapta, pe fond albastru, se află imaginea stilizată a unui palat în argint şi negru, pe o terasă verde. În câmpul superior, în cartierul din stânga, pe fond roşu, se află o spadă şi un topuz, încrucişate, de argint, surmontate de o coroană voievodală de aur. În vârful scutului, în câmp argintiu, se află pasărea Phoenix, neagră, ieşind dintr-un rug roşu. Scutul este trimbrat de o coroană murală de argint cu şapte turnuri crenelate.

Palatul reprezintă sediul Primăriei Municipiului Buzău. Armele semnifică vitejia locuitorilor, încă din Evul Mediu, până la sfârşitul celui de al II-lea Război Mondial. Brâul undat reprezintă râul Buzău. Pasărea Phoenix semnifică vitalitatea locuitorilor care, aşezaţi în calea răutăţilor, cu oraşul distrus complet de trei ori în decursul istoriei, au renăscut din propria cenuşă. Coroana murală cu şapte turnuri crenelate semnifică faptul că localitatea are rangul de municipiu, reşedinţă de judeţ.
