A psychiatric diagnosis is a process used by mental health professionals to identify and classify a mental disorder based on a person's symptoms, behavior, and history. This process typically involves a thorough evaluation, including a medical history, physical exam, psychological assessment, and potentially laboratory tests, to rule out other potential causes and determine the appropriate diagnosis. Psychosis is a set of symptoms indicating a loss of contact with reality, often associated with mental health conditions, substance use, or other medical problems. Treatment can help manage symptoms, but it's crucial to seek professional help if someone is experiencing psychosis. (Deviance, Distress, Dysfunction, and Danger) It is a framework used to assess and understand abnormal behavior in psychopathology. These criteria help determine if a behavior deviates significantly from social norms, causes distress or suffering, impairs daily functioning, or poses a risk to the individual or others. • Dead Soldier: an empty beer bottle. • Hawkshaw: a detective. • Moll: a gangster's girl. • Glad rags: someone's best going-out clothes. • Flapper: a lively mid-teenage girl, or a young prostitute. • Collywobbles: initially, it meant having butterflies in your stomach. Paranoia is a state of excessive mistrust and suspicion of others, often characterized by the belief that people are intentionally trying to harm or deceive you. This can manifest as irrational thoughts, feelings of anxiety, and even the belief that others are spying on or plotting against you. Paranoia can be a symptom of various mental health conditions, including schizophrenia, delusional disorder, and paranoid personality disorder. Brain diseases and disorders encompass a wide range of conditions affecting the brain and nervous system, impacting various functions like movement, memory, and cognition. These conditions can be categorized into several types, including neurodegenerative diseases, neurological disorders, and mental health conditions. Neurodiversity refers to the natural variation in human brains and how they function, rather than viewing neurological differences as deficits or disorders. It embraces the idea that there is no single "right" way for a brain to work and encouages acceptance and inclusion of all individurals, including those with ocnditions like sutism, ADHD, or learning fidderences. • involves episodes of psychosis (loss of contact with reality)
Epidemiology
• Lifetime prevalence:~1% worldwide • Onset: typically late adolescence to early adulthood • Men: 18-25 years • Women: 25-35 years • Equal rates in men and women. but men often have earlier onset and poorer prognosis.
Etiology (causes) Biological
• Genetics: strong hereditary component • Risk: 1% general population → 10% first-degree relative → 40-50% identical twin • Neurotransmitters: • Dopamine hypothesis (excess dopamine activity in mesolimbic pathway) • Glutamate and serotonin also implicated • Brain adnormalities: enlarged ventricles, reduced gray matter, hippocampal/amygdala abnormalities
Environmental
• Prenatal infections, malutrition, hypozia • Childhood drauma • Cannabis/drug use in adolescence (esp. THC) • Urban upbringing. stress
