English: Hyderābād state (Telugu: హైదరాబాదు, Urdu: حیدر آباد ریاست) was the largest Indian princely states in the erstwhile British Indian Empire. It was located in the south-central region of the Indian subcontinent, and was ruled, from 1724 until 1948, by the Nizams. The Berar region of the state was merged with the Central Provinces of British India in 1903, to form the en:Central Provinces and Berar. It covered the current states of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra, and Karnataka. In 1947, following the the Partition, Nizam Asaf Jah VII (Osman Ali Khan), a Muslim ruler who presided over a largely Hindu population, wanted to remain in power and remain independent of either nation. In 1948, India, annexed Hyderabad and created Hyderabad State within India. It had an area of 82,698 mi² or (214,190 km²).
