I am currently a college student studying BS Information Technology at the Ateneo de Zamboanga University. I am an amateur photographer, mainly taking photos for our university paper.
I started contributing to the Wikimedia projects around 2018 when I was improving our university's Wikipedia page. I created my own articles around 2023 and slowly started to contribute to other Wikipedia articles related to Zamboanga City in 2024. I began regularly reviewing files on Wikimedia Commons around late 2024 with the help of User:JWilz12345. On January 4, 2025, I joined WikiClub Zamboanga, and shortly after, I applied to be administrator for the Chavacano de Zamboanga Wikipedia, fixing templates, modules, articles, etc.
I can speak fluent English, a conversational level of Filipino, and a little bit of Bisaya.
I know basic HTML, CSS, JS, C++, and Java.
Focus
Copyright
- Philippine copyrights are my main focus. There should be more workshops for new contributors to Wikimedia projects (or for anyone at this point) because of how often people accidentally violate copyrights without even knowing.
- Pre-1972 copyrights are the most frustrating to check because IPOPHIL doesn't really list down old copyright registrations nor publish them in books, requiring you to take yourself to NLP just to check its copyright status. There should be a better way, but there isn't.
Language preservation
- I believe it to be imperative that Chavacano as a language, particularly Chavacano de Zamboanga, must be preserved as soon as possible. Factors such as a noticeable change in the generally accepted vocabulary or speakers not being able to distinguish between Chavacano and Spanish should be addressed immediately.
- There is also the concern that Chavacano is mainly a spoken language and is not often used in its written form nor online, causing conflicts in spelling, grammar, and comprehension among native speakers.
Although I am not a native speaker myself, I believe that, with the Wikimedia projects, usage of Chavacano online can help others discover the language and promote correct usage. This also ensures that an essential part of the heritage of Zamboanga City is easily accessible online.
Education
- Particularly in rural areas, access to education is limited, especially because English is still widely used as the medium of instruction across the country. The lack of published materials in Chavacano is also a prevalent issue. Families living in rural areas in Zamboanga City natively speak Chavacano; some are multilingual with English or Filipino as their second language, while others are only monolingual and cannot speak another language.
Wikimedia projects can help with this by providing educational articles that are comprehensible at the base level. But, with this comes a lot of trial and error, as a younger speaker may not fully understand the vocabulary of an older speaker and may treat it as "deep Chavacano." These projects need to be pushed further to be rendered useful to a layperson.
Archival
- Old materials are at risk of destruction, decay, or being lost to time. Newspapers, old photographs, films, and tape recordings, in particular, contain valuable information that may not be known by anyone today, but are essential in piecing together narratives and histories of particular subjects.
Safeguarding these materials and making them accessible to anyone is extremely beneficial to all parties as this ensures that primary sources and different narratives can be studied for years to come, as well as preserves the histories within them.
Works
These are works I made mainly to help myself but can also be used by others.
