Siyasi elm professoru Tatu Vanhanenə görə,"Cənubi Asiyanın yeddi ölkəsi Hindistan yarımqitəsi ətrafında coğrafi kompakt regionu təşkil edir";[1] antropoloq John R. Lukacsa görə isə, "Hindistan yarımqitəsi Cənubi Asiyanın əsas quru kütləsini tutur."[2] Chris Brewsterə görə, Hindistan, Pakistan, Banqladeş, Şri-Lanka, Nepal və Butan , Hindistan yarımqitəsin təşkil edirlər; Əfqanıstan və Maldiv daxil olmaqla daha çox yayqın olaraq Cənubi Asiya adlanır.[3]
"Hindistan yarımqitəsi" və "Cənubi Asiya" terminləri birbirlərinin yerinə istifadə edilir.[4][5][6][7][8]
