Helmut İohan Lüdviq fon Moltke 25 may 1848-ci ildə Meklenburq-Ön Pomeraniyada yerləşən Bindorfda anadan olmuşdur. O, Helmut Moltkenin (Böyük) qardaşı oğludur. Birinci Dünya müharibəsində Almaniya ordusunun Baş qərargah rəisi (əslində baş komandanı) olan Moltke qoşunlara rəhbərlik etməyi bacarmamış və komandanlıqdan kənar edilmişdir. O, 18 iyun 1916-cu il tarixində, 68 yaşında Berlin şəhərində vəfat etmişdir.[4]
