Infection.—Thrs may occur by way of the urogenitaltract. As first pointed out by Epstein, an inflammation of the vagina,bladder, or kidneys may be a starting-point of general infection. Among the predisposing causes of infection of the newborn mustbe considered congenital weakness. Thus, the greatest number ofcases occur among the weakly infants of syphilitic or tuberculousparentage, premature infants, and those possessing birth anomalies. Symptoms.—It is impossible to particularize any form of sepsis sofar as the general symptoms are concerned. The reaction in the newborninfant is so imperfect and the signs are so equivocal that it is oftenonly at the autopsy table that the nature of the lesion is determined.It will be convenient, therefore, simply to enumerate the objectivechanges noted in the various structures of the body in this disease. Skin.—The skin may be dry, or the seat of localized oedema orsclerema. It may be the seat of erythema, either on the body or on PLATE VII

Sepsis in the Newborn Infant. Suppuration of theright knee-joint. Osteomyelitis of the epiphyses of thebones forming the joint. SEPTIC INFECTION OF TEE NEWBORN INFANT. ZU3 the extensor surface of the arms or hands. There is sometimes ageneral or localized cyanosis. A peculiar form of this cyanosis hasbeen described by Finkelstein—the so-called angiospastic cyanosis—in which a central pallor and peripheral lividity are present in thepatches. The cyanosis may be limited to the hands and feet. Eruptions of a pemphigoid character are sometimes seen in casesof sepsis of the newborn infant. The vesicles may be the seat ofsuppuration, or there may be ulcers and intertrigo varying fromsuperficial erosions to extensive areas of gangrene. The skin maybe pale or icteric in hue. There may be erysipelatous patches, fur-uncles, and multiple abscesses. Mouth.—The mucous membrane of the mouth is dry and fissured,and the tongue dry and coated. The roof of the mouth may be theseat of ulcerations,
