English: A “Pirates & Highwaymen” cigarette card published by the W.D. & H.O. Wills company in 1925, number 2 of a series of 25, titled “Captain Avery. Rifling the Great Mogul’s Ship.” The reverse description reads: “The depredations of this pirate in 1695, caught the public fancy and made Avery the “hero” of several popular novels and plays. In a ship of 46 guns he established himself at Perim and levied toll on ships passing in or out of the Red Sea. From the Gunsway a ship belonging to the Great Mogul, he took upwards of £300,000 and several important prisoners. The Mogul retaliated by stopping the E. India Company’s trade, but Avery escaped to the W. Indies with his plunder. Large rewards were offered for his apprehension, but nothing is known for certain of his subsequent history.
