English: Portrait of John Bunyan; bust, slightly to right, eyes to front, with long hair and moustache, wearing cassock. c.1679
Graphite on vellum, finished in metalpoint
Stainton & White 1987
One of the few ad vivum portraits of John Bunyan, the famous nonconformist preacher and writer, chiefly celebrated for his book 'The Pilgrim's Progress' (1678), an allegory of the Christian life. This drawing was used by Robert White for the engraved portrait of Bunyan which formed the frontispiece to another of his allegorical epics, 'The Holy War' (1682). White may, however, have made the drawing some years earlier as the basis for his famous engraving of Bunyan dreaming, first used for the 1679 edition of 'The Pilgrim's Progress'.
This drawing was issued as a coloured facsimile by the British Museum in 'Reproductions of Drawings by Old Masters in the British Museum', Part III, Published by the Trustees, in 1893 where it was number XII(A) and described there as 'Robert White, Portrait of John Bunyan.'

This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag.
Note: This tag applies to scans and photocopies only. For photographs of public domain originals taken from afar, {{PD-Art}} may be applicable. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag.
