"Fig. 28. Small Palace, In-glaze Painted Luster Tile with Two Human Figures Side by Side, Konya Karatay Museum.
One group of luster tiles unearthed in the excavations carried out in the Small Palace since 1985 has the same characteristics as the Great Palace luster tiles 630. Another group draws attention with its new patterns, subjects and technical features encountered for the first time: These are different examples of tiles processed with the “glaze painting” technique. Turquoise and cobalt blue paints were infiltrated into the opaque white glaze to give it shape and obtain a more distinct appearance. This technique is also seen in 12th-13th century Kashan ceramics.
One of the most interesting examples in the Small Palace is the eight-pointed star tile with two human figures painted in brown luster on opaque white glaze and occasionally in cobalt blue in the glaze (Fig. 28). Although half of it is cut, the composition can be understood: Abstract leafy curved branches decorate the background on the tile surface. On the lower side, in the tile cut in an oblique manner, only the head of one figure can be seen, while the other's entire part, almost to the knees, can be seen. They are depicted in the Central Asian Uyghur Turk type with arched eyebrows, almond eyes, long-thin noses, small mouths, moles and long braided hair on their plump faces. One of them has a hoop earring hanging from his ear. There are bracelets, rings, necklaces and it is stated that jewelry such as earrings are symbols of status in society. The figures wear blue-striped headdresses and have halos on their heads. Spiral motifs, which were frequently used in Iranian and Syrian ceramics during the Seljuk period, decorate the caftans of the figures in this tile. The open collar of the caftan reveals a blue and yellow spotted undergarment. There are blue painted tirazes on the arms. The hand of the figure, which we can see almost in its entirety, coming out from under his caftan and his gaze directed at the figure next to him indicate that he is talking to him about something. In the excavations at the Small Palace, many fragments of luster tiles containing only heads and faces of human figures of the same type were found together with this tile. These human types on the Kubad Abad tiles have the same characteristics as the human types seen on the 12th and 13th century ceramics of Kashan and on a few tile fragments 631. In the 12th-13th century Kashan ceramics, in scenes depicting an event, large groups of people are sometimes depicted talking to each other, sometimes on the edge of a pool. Fish are swimming in the pool. It is interesting to see that these scenes, which have parallel examples in miniatures, are depicted in every branch of Islamic painting."
