English: Interstellar comet imaged by the James Webb Space Telescope NIRSpec instrument (Integral Field Unit aka IFU mode) on 6 August 2025. The results were announced by NASA on 25 August 2025. The three image panels shows how the brightness of 3I/ATLAS changes depending on the wavelength of light---this is due to different emission (bright) and absorption (dark) signatures created by certain compounds that make up 3I/ATLAS's coma and nucleus. The left image shows the overall brightness of 3I/ATLAS across the whole wavelength range of NIRSpec (0.6-5.3 um), the middle image shows emission of CO2 from 3I/ATLAS (in 4.3 um wavelengths), and the right image shows weak emission of water vapor (H2O) from 3I/ATLAS (in 2.7 um wavelengths)
