This item is a photograph depicting the battleship USS Nevada (BB-36) when she was based at the Boston Navy Yard and served in convoy duty in the Atlantic during World War II. USS Nevada was the second U.S. Navy ship to be named after the 36th state in the Union and was the lead of two Nevada-class battleships; USS Oklahoma (BB-37) was her sister ship. Laid down November 4, 1912 and launched July 11, 1914 by the Fore River Shipyard in Quincy, Massachusetts, Nevada was commissioned March 11, 1916 at Boston Navy Yard. She served in both World Wars and was the only battleship present at both the attack on Pearl Harbor (December 7, 1941) and the invasion of Normandy (June 6, 1944). At Pearl Harbor, Nevada grounded after sustaining extensive damage, including several bomb hits and one torpedo hit, while attempting to escape the harbor. She was refloated and, after several months of repairs, returned to action at the Battle of Attu in 1943. After performing Atlantic convoy duty, Nevada provided bombardment support to Allied forces at Normandy, Toulon, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. After the war, Nevada was assigned to be a target ship in the Operation Crossroads atomic experiments at Bikini Atoll. Surviving the tests, Nevada was decommissioned on August 29, 1946 and sunk during gunfire practice off Hawaii on July 31, 1948. USS Nevada earned seven battle stars for her World War II service.
