English: This image takes us to Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula in the northern Pacific, typically covered in bright white clouds on satellite. However, on June 22, 2019, the NOAA/NASA Suomi-NPP satellite caught a different type of cloud poking through—the towering brown ash cloud from the eruption of the Raikoke volcano on Kamchatka’s Kuril Islands. This was the first major eruption of Raikoke since 1924 and it shot about 6-8 miles into the atmosphere. NOAA’s JPSS satellites don’t just track the visible ash plumes of volcanoes, they also have an instrument called the Ozone Mapping Profiler Suite (OMPS), which can track the movement of the sulfur dioxide (SO2) gas released from volcanic eruptions.
