"One of Sultan-Muhammad's miniatures, The Feast of 'Id Begins (Plate 17), is inscribed with the name of Sam Mirza, one of Shah Tahmasp's brothers, and it was probably made for him, perhaps as a present from the Shah. The young prince seated on the throne bearing one of the two known signatures of Sultan-Muhammad (the other is on Plate 18) is generally accepted as a portrait of Sam Mirza, the most literary of the Shah's brothers, who wrote important accounts of contemporary poets. Although at least one other major illustrated manuscript was made by the royal workshop for Sam Mirza (Jami's Chain of Gold, now in the State Library, Leningrad), he was not much loved by his reigning brother. Sam Mirza was implicated in a grave plot against the crown in 1535, so it is no wonder that the Shah eventually imprisoned him. Sam was killed in an earthquake in 1567." SIGNED ON THE THRONE BY SULTAN-MUHAMMAD

Roses and friends eagerly await, for it is the time of 'Id.

Saki! (wine bearer) Behold the refulgent moon in the king's resplendent face and bring wine!

He is fortunate, a noble ruler, Oh God, Spare him from the evil eye.

'Id, the feast marking the end of the fast of Ramadan, begins at the moment when the new moon is sighted. The artist's earthy sense of humor, reminiscent of his hunting scene in the Paris manuscript (Plate 13), spoofs the celebration, particularly in the portrayal of the moon-watchers on the rooftop. One is grimly serious, two others stifle yawns, while a pair of lovers are otherwise preoccupied. Below, the host (presumably Prince Sam Mirza, whose name and title are inscribed above the archway to the right) oversees a gathering of courtiers, some of whom are entwined with roses in a botanical arabesque, while slightly porcine waiters begin to distribute wine and sweetmeats."
