Leaves 1-93 contain a Cakchikel-Quiché-Tzutuhil grammar. Religious material in the "Tratado segundo" (leaves 94-119) includes a copy of a letter of Feb. 1580 from Father Alonso Noreña, responding to doctrinal questions on the confessions of the Indians; and--in various combinations of Cakchikel, Quiché, Tzutuhil, and Spanish--a confession; a catechism; important prayers; the Ten Commandments; explanations of the sacraments, sins, and virtues; the Beatitudes; and questions for the administration of the sacraments of baptism, marriage, and the viaticum. The text which begins "Empiezan las historias del origen de los indios de esta provincia de Guatemala" is the earliest remaining ms. of the Popol vuh, transcribed by Ximénez in Quiché and translated by him into Spanish. It contains the legends explaining the creation of the world, the origins and early migrations of Central American Indians, their history and traditions, and the chronology of the last Quiché kings and rulers. The final ms., "Escolios a la historia de el origen de los indios" contains Ximénez's comments on the history and fragments of a confession, as well as an apostrophe praising the Dominican Order, dated Aug. 14, 1734 and signed "Echave."scan of original @ 900 dpi @ 48 bit RGBdate 5-1-2006
