From the auction notes: Lili Elbe was born Einer Wegener in 1886 and hers became one of the most notorious sex change stories in history. Wegener had his genitals organs removed, ovaries transplanted to him and attempts were made to give him a artifical vagina. Wegener began his transistion whilst married to the artist Gerda Wegener (who painted this portrait) but the marriage was invalidated by the King of Denmark in October 1930. Lili died as a result of her fifth operation that she had hoped would allow her to have intercourse with a man she was engaged to. |
