| İzah | The statue with the man is a hook for windows, from the island of Yap. Item is from the Collection Zembsch, 1884. The second piece is a head of cat made from sandstone, also from Yap. Item from the Collection Senfft, 1902. Among anthropologists who visited the Micronesian islands of Yap in the beginning of the 20th century, the plastic art of the islanders found little acknowledgement. The German Wilhelm Müller for example, who visited Yap in 1909, passed the judgement: "The artistic gift of the people of Yap is on a relatively low level.". Today we know that judging the aesthetics of non-European societies measured by western standards usually lead to the wrong conclusions. It can be assumed, that the objects tells us more about the extent of European influence on Yap, than about the traditional Yapese art forms and meanings: Cats were introduced by the Europeans to Yap at the end of the 19th century. Possibly, representations of the animals were made primarily for the sale to Europeans. However, the carved figure with one head in the shape of a cat and the other in the shape of a man was made for own purposes: It is a hook, which served to to keep open windows and doors of houses. Both items are at the Ethnologisches Museum, Berlin-Dahlem. |
