| İzah | BP’s Deepwater Horizon rig on fire in the Gulf of Mexico. On April 20, 2010, the oil drilling rig Deepwater Horizon, operating in the BP-operated Macondo Prospect in the Gulf of Mexico, exploded and sank, resulting in the death of 11 workers on the Deepwater Horizon and the largest marine oil spill to date. Approximately 4.9 billion barrels of oil flowed from the damaged Macondo well over an 87-day period before it was finally capped on July 15, 2010. In response to the BP oil spill, a massive cleanup effort began, during which EPA monitored air, water, sediment, and waste generated by the cleanup operations. In 2012, BP settled federal criminal charges with the Department of Justice and pled guilty to 11 counts of manslaughter, two misdemeanors, and a felony count of lying to Congress. |
