Deutsch: Die offizielle heraldische Beschreibung des Augsburger Wappens nennt einen von Rot und Silber gespaltenen Schild, auf dem sich eine grüne Zirbelnuss auf einem goldenen Kapitell befindet. Dementsprechend sind die Stadtfarben rot-grün-weiß.
Das älteste nachweisbare Stadtsiegel Augsburgs aus dem Jahr 1237 zeigt ein zweitürmiges Stadttor mit Zinnenmauer und darüber einen Stern. Im Torbogen steht ein Lebensbaum, ab 1260 eine Traube auf Fuß, die wohl auf den Namen der Stadt „Augster“ anspielt, was eine Traubensorte darstellt. Im 15. Jahrhundert wird eine grüne Traube in rot-weißem Schild dargestellt, was sich durch den Fund eines Pinienzapfens (wohl die Spitze eines römischen Grabbaus) 1467 ändert: Seitdem wird statt der Traube eine Zirbelnuss abgebildet. Das Köpfchen auf dem Kapitell ist seit 1521 nachweisbar, die Mauerkrone erst seit 1811. Die Bedeutung dieser Symbole ist nicht geklärt. Die Stadtfarben sind seit 1372 bekannt. Die Zirbelnuss war als stilisierter Pinienzapfen das Feldzeichen der römischen Legion des Römerlagers und wurde zum Symbol der späteren römischen Hauptstadt der Provinz Raetia. Noch heute findet sich die Zirbelnuss auf zahlreichen Gebäuden und Mauern im gesamten Stadtgebiet als Zeichen Augsburger Würde. Die Zirbelnuss steht in einem rot-weiß gespaltenen Schild, der auf das Banner des Bischofs von Augsburg zurückzuführen ist, der, wie die alten Feldzeichen des Herzogtums Schwaben, die Farben rot-weiß trug.English: The oldest known seal of Augsburg from 1237 shows a city gate under a star. The grapes are a canting symbol, Augster is a variety of grapes. In the meantime the arms developed separately. In the 15th century the grapes appear in images on a red and white shield. The shield is taken from the arms of the Bishopric of Augsburg. In the late 15th century an antique pine tree cone was found in the city and the grapes were subsequently changed into a pine cone, the so-called Zirbelnuss.
