Thespine shows a rachitic dorso-lumbar curve, more prominent on the left. Liverand spleen are greatly enlarged. The child can barely sit up and hold upher head, and has never been able to stand alone. In appearance she remindsone at first glance of a cretin, and is probably a case of infantile osteomalacia.She weighed eight pounds when born, sixteen when five months old, ten when3ne year of age, and thirty now. When born she was very dark-skinned andhairy all over the body. During most of her life her bowels have been muchdisturbed, and she had one attack of convulsions when about five months old.She cut her first teeth at fifteen months. During the last year she has sleptfrom twelve to fifteen hours out of the twenty-four. As a rule, she is not crossand cries very little. The fanfily history is not good. SPORADIC CRETINISM. CRETINISM. inrandparents were cousins; the maternal grandmother has paralysis agitans;the paternal grandmother bas bowel consumption.1 Etiology. — Cretinism is especially prevalent in high mountain-rangesremote from the coast ; wet or ondrained soil appears to have some power forits development; and water charged with lime and magnesia is common in theregions in which it is endemic. Practically, the ultimate cause of cretinism isunknown. Bury (Keating* Oycl. Die. Children) suggests the great importancein future investigations of the causation of this disease of reconsidering thequestion of heredity, and especially to what extent close interbreeding takesplace in the affected districts.
