The arms were officially granted on November 14, 1931, but date from medieval times. The arms are based on the medieval seal of the city, which showed a very typical design of the time; a city wall with three towers. Deutsch: Blasonierung:„In Rot eine gezinnte silberne (weiße) Stadtmauer, deren Seitenteile perspektivisch zurücktreten und in deren Mittelteil sich ein Stadttor mit offenen Torflügeln und hochgezogenem Fallgatter befindet; hinter der Stadtmauer ein sechseckiger silberner (weißwer) Turm mit goldenem (gelbem) Dach, flankiert von zwei schmaleren, niedrigeren, gezinnten silbernen (weißen) Rundtürmen mit goldenen (gelben) Spitzdächern.“ Das Wappen wurde der Stadtgemeinde zuletzt am 14. November 1931 verliehen. Die älteste erhaltene Darstellung des Salzburger Stadtwappens, auf einem Stadtsiegel, stammt aus dem Jahr 1249 und fand in dieser Form bis ins 15. Jahrhundert Verwendung. Das heutige Stadtwappen ist eine Weiterentwicklung des später entstandenen spätgotischen Stadtsiegeltyps. Wurde bis vor etlichen Jahren ein detailreiches Wappen verwendet, so ist heute ein stark stilisiertes gebräuchlich. |
