is. Whatever the man hasaccomplished, it has been by his own unaidedeftort, by hard work and unremittent following of aserious idea from which he has never deviated onemoment. Incidentally, it is the man with one ideawho arrives at a successful result, and I believe thatMr. Alexander would rather paint than cat. Inall these years he has been a hard taskmaster forhimself, a severe critic, an unrelenting overseer, andthe ends have fully justified the means, for he knowshis ynetier from the ground up, in every department,in whatever medium, and alas, in these days of theeffort to find the short cut to art, too few of themen are thus equipped. I am almost inclined to believe that the trade ofthe portrait painter—if I may so refer to it—de-mands a better working knowledge of the practiceof art than almost any other branch of the pro-fession.
