Ameli Nothomb 6 iyul 1966-cı ildə Etterberkdə aristokratik ailədə anadan olub.[3] Atası Belçika diplomatı idi. Bu səbəbdən onun uşaqlığı müxtəlif ölkələrdə keçib. Uşaqlıq dövrü onun ədəbi əsərlərində dərin təsir buraxmışdır.[4] O, "Brüssel Azad Universiteti"ndə filologiya üzrə təhsil almışdır.[5]
Nothombun debüt əsəri "Hygiène de l'assassin" (1992) tezliklə insan təbiəti və ekzistensial məsələlərə dair satirik və ağıllı şərhləri ilə diqqət çəkdi. Bu roman onun uğurlu ədəbi karyerasının başlanğıcı oldu. Roman özünü nifrət edən və tanınmaq üçün mübarizə aparan tənhalığa çəkilmiş bir yazıçını təsvir edir. Onun ikinci əsəri "Le Sabotage amoureux" (1993) sevgi və kimlik məsələlərini araşdırır.[6][7]
Nothombun əsərləri çox vaxt xarakterlərinin ekzistensial problemlərlə üzləşdiyi və insan münasibətlərinin mürəkkəbliyini araşdırdığı əsərlərdir. O, tez-tez absurdla dərin düşüncəni birləşdirir. O, tünd yumor, daxili aləmlər, kimlik, mədəniyyət qarşıdurması və ekzistensial suallar üzərində qurulmuş əsərləri ilə tanınır.
