Hi, I'm Stryn, a Wikimedist from Finland. I registered to my first Wikimedia project, the Finnish Wikipedia on 6th October, 2006 at 20.54.

I've been contributing actively to Wikimedia projects since 2009. During my first years I wrote mostly new articles and edited existing Wikipedia articles. Later I've been doing more other things, like translating newsletters, help pages and interface messages in Finnish; and anything related to technics as much as I have knowledge; and of course counter vandalism.

Nowadays I spend most of my time on Meta-Wiki and the Finnish Wikipedia.

About user rights and activities

On the Finnish Wikipedia I'm an administrator (January 2011–) and a CheckUser (May 2015–). user page.

On Meta-Wiki I'm an administrator (September 2014–).

I'm a steward of Wikimedia wikis (March 2015–) (before it I was a global sysop and a global rollbacker). I was a member of the Ombuds commission between February and June 2014.

On Wikidata I was an administrator between November 2012 and September 2024. I was an oversighter there between September 2013 and June 2014. I was one of the first administrators of the project.

On the Finnish Wikipedia I was a member of the Finnish Arbitration Committee between October 2013 and September 2017.

I work as OTRS-volunteer. I am also member of the Small Wiki Monitoring Team and I translate interface messages on Translatewiki and other messages on Meta as a tech ambassador.

I have attended some edithathons and other events in Finland led by Wikimedia Suomi. In 2016 I was in Wikimania in Italy and in 2019 in Sweden. I'm interested mostly about sports, music, technology and travelling. On IRC you can find me on libera.chat where I am under cloak user/stryn.

Weekly highlight

The Chart extension is now available on all Wikimedia wikis. Editors can use this new extension to create interactive data visualizations like bar, line, area, and pie charts. Charts are designed to replace many of the uses of the legacy Graph extension.

Updates for editors

It is now easier to configure automatic citations for your wiki within the visual editor's citation generator. Administrators can now set a default template by using the _default key in the local MediaWiki:Citoid-template-type-map.json page (example diff). Setting this default will also help to future-proof your existing configurations when new item types are added in the future. You can still set templates for individual item types as they will be preferred to the default template. [1]

Updates for technical contributors

Starting the week of June 2, bots logging in using action=login or action=clientlogin will fail more often. This is because of stronger protections against suspicious logins. Bots using bot passwords or using a loginless authentication method such as OAuth are not affected. If your bot is not using one of those, you should update it; using action=login without a bot password was deprecated in 2016. For most bots, this only requires changing what password the bot uses. From this week, Wikimedia wikis will allow ES2017 features in JavaScript code for official code, gadgets, and user scripts. The most visible feature of ES2017 is async/await syntax, allowing for easier-to-read code. Until this week, the platform only allowed up to ES2016, and a few months before that, up to ES2015. [3]

Meetings and events

Scholarship applications to participate in the GLAM Wiki Conference 2025 are now open. The conference will take place from 30 October to 1 November, in Lisbon, Portugal. GLAM contributors who lack the means to support their participation can apply here. Scholarship applications close on June 7th.
