Concerning the terminology "Azerbaijan", from one hand side you are right - Azerbaijan was the name of territories which is approximately North-west of nowdays Iran or approximately Azerbaijani provinces of Iran + some territories around them(like Zanjan). territories inhabited by turks in Caucasus were called Arran, Shirvan, etc. After the Russia-Iran wars from the end of XVIII century until 1828 when Iran lost these wars, many scholars, writers, historians, politichians analysing the population of Iran as well as turks of new russian ruled turks of Caucasus emphasized that people of both side of Aras have the same language and habits. that time the name of Arran was out of use, Shirvan was only part of these territories. So slowly, step-by-step the name of Azerbaijani for their language was introduced for these people (naturally for both side of Aras). Next stage was 1918, after the first World War, when three etnics of Caucasus, georgians, armenians, and...azerbaijanis, that is people speaking in azerbaijani announced their indpendence. They announced about new Demokratic Republic - Azerbaijan Xalq Cumhuriyyeti. so in the map two Azerbaijans were appeared. After the Sovietisation one of republics signed Union agreement was (Soviet Socialist) Republic of Azerbaijan (1922). So it was second time that the name of Azerbaijan introduced for the State of Azerbaijani people living in nowdays Azerbajan. From that time people started to use sometimes Southern Azerbaijan for iranian Azerbaijan. Then as a result, Northern Azerbaijan for the Republic of Azerbaijan. Next stage was the period of Second World war. Soviet Army has entered to Iran. Azerbaijani (Iranian) Democratic Party under Pishavari announced authonomy of Azerbaijan (Iranian or Southern Az.) within Iran. It was some straggle between the Republican people -authonomy or independence? Anyway after the withdrawal of Soviet Army this Republic was not able to live. From that time people from the Republic of Azerbaijan (Soviet), literature, history all of them called about two Azerbaijan, Northern and Southern, as Northern America and Southern America, the same for Korea, Osetia. So it was a result of almost two centuries of all these developments. Nowdays people of Northern Azerbaijan are looking for some freedom of Southern azerbaijani people to chose their own language for education and wish their best for both Azerbaijani and Persian (and other)people of Iran.

So names of countries may change due to geopolitics, wars, etc. Iran also was not Iran during Khalifate, saljuks, mongols and other were rules. then Safavids -that period it was turks and persians both under Safavids and it was Persia...

So let us try to live friendly respecting all rights of all Azerbaijani, persian and other people of both Republic of azerbaijan and Iran! thank you!

which "Dediklərinizin"? I think you should bring your "historical" proofs in the article or mention that this subject is unproven and controversial. I think you also should mention my perspective on this issue (which is the perspective of the majority of the academic world) in the article.

The time north of Aras was cut off from Iran there was no country named Azerbaijan and there isn't even a proof about any sort of autonomous region called Azerbaijan, either in the south of the Aras or in the north. Countries were later created according to their ethnic mix. For example in Europe Romania never existed as a country before the 20th century. First Romania was made up of "muntenia" and "Moldova" and then in 1918 for the first time "Transilvania" joined Romania. Romania never existed as a country and the reason it was/is called Romania is because its population are mostly Romanians.

The same thing is about Azerbijan. North and south of Aras were/are populated by Azerbaijani Turks so you cannot say north of Aras is not Azerbaijan. 02:59, 4 Yanvar 2007 (UTC)

Sorry I can't read nor write in Azeri so I have to write in English. I think that it is much better to move the article to "Iranian Azerbaijan" (İrandilli Azərbaycan) if my translation is correct.
